The second I opened the curtains, I knew we had to leave the house. We just couldn’t spend the day indoors when it was so clear outside. Thank God for breaks in the rain during monsoon season!

I suggested we hike Suri-san since we’ve never been over there. Suri-san is the bigger mountain we see here in Sanbon. We took the subway over one stop to get us to the foot of the mountain. There were several trails shown on a map there, we decided to follow the one that seemed to be the main one.

We were having a great old time, taking pictures and chatting, for the first 45 minutes or so. There were a few inclines that were pretty steep but I was still having a lot of fun. Around that time I told Matt that if we came to the end soon, I would say that I had had a great time. He thought I was kidding and started laughing. If only. Haha. As much as I want to be a outdoorsey person, I’m just not. I love being outside, I just have a slight aversion to hiking and camping. I’m really trying to enjoy them more, since my husband gets so excited whenever we do them, but I’m not sure that I’ll ever be like, “Hey, Matt, let’s spend our next vacation camping in Yosemite!” I could see going there for a week, but staying in a lodge of some sort. Hehe.

After I made my comment, we got to the real climbing. I was glad that I didn’t wear flip flops because, even though there was a path to follow, it wasn’t exactly easy going. Ok, maybe it was easy, but I was having quite the time with it. Actually, the climb was probably harder for me today because my legs were DEAD when I woke up this morning from taekwondo last night. My thighs are so sore. Just to give you an idea of how bad it is, when I’m going to use the toilet, I can’t make it all the way down into a sitting position, I lose control halfway down and have to fall the rest of the way. Haha! It’s hilarious! Whenever I’m working out, or after, I tell myself that I love the burn, the burn is a good thing, keep going, you are going to have buns of steel… but it’s kind of inconvenient now and then. Lol.

So the climb got a bit harder, the incline was pretty steep and we were both sweating like crazy. I was amazed at how sturdy the old folks were up there, with all their long sleeved hiking clothing and gear. Good Lord. It was fun though, they all seemed to be excited that we were up there. It did feel really good, especially since the air was so clear today, it felt so good to breath deeply.

We realized we had come to the end of that route when the path turned to concrete. There was a sign showing the way to a Buddhist temple, but we didn’t go check it out because we really needed something to drink. We veered off and walked back down to the city. We saw a sign that said Geumjeong subway station was straight ahead (the subway stop after our own), so we got some Pocari Sweat (ha!) and Gatorade and started walking. After a few minutes I saw an E-Mart. I thought it was strange that there was an E-Mart at our subway stop and, apparently, at the next one too. A few seconds later Matt realized that we were coming up on our apartments from the backside. Craziness! We didn’t even realize it. We’ve walked in that direction only about a block or so, so we had no idea where we were exactly.

We went upstairs, dropped our cameras off, showered and then went down to the basement and ate at Outback. Ribs. Delicious. In the basement. Heck ya!

We had so much fun today! I’m serious. It was just great. We were hoping to get pictures looking down on our little city, but there was never a shot through all of the trees. We’re going to try to go again before we leave, but we’ll take another route next time. Maybe I am warming up to this whole hiking idea. :)

One Response to We Finally Hiked the Mountain In Our Backyard

A hike sounds so nice! I’m so looking forward to being able to be active again-I’m tired of sitting around with a big ol’ belly doing nothing. What I really want to do is float down the river…but I know that is a long way off anyways… But hey, at least I can go on hikes soon!
